K.R. Mangalam World School, Kailash Colony, Greater Kailash-I, successfully hosted Chaturanga 2026, The Interschool Rapid Chess Championship on 23rd & 24th July 2026. The prestigious two-day event brought together more than 700 young chess enthusiasts from over 42 schools across Delhi-NCR, providing them with an exceptional platform to showcase their strategic thinking, concentration, and sporting spirit. The championship was graced by the Chief Guest, the legendary Indian Chess Grandmaster Adhiban Baskaran, whose remarkable achievements have inspired countless young players. The Guest of Honour, Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Shivika Rohilla, also attended the event, motivating the participants with her presence and celebrating the spirit of competitive chess. The gathering was further honoured by the presence of Mr. Khushmeet Singh, former International Hockey player, whose illustrious sporting career and inspiring journey encouraged the students
The tournament was further elevated by the gracious presence of the Chairman, Shri Inder Dev Gupta, whose visionary leadership and unwavering encouragement have consistently played a pivotal role in nurturing excellence among students. The benign presence of the Director, Mr. Rahul Gupta, Head of K.R. Mangalam International School, Mrs. Neera Kanojia, Academic Advisor, K.R. Mangalam Schools, Ms. Suman Sharma; Academic Auditor, Mr. Ashok Arora, added immense significance to the occasion and made the event even more impactful.
The championship commenced on an auspicious note with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, symbolising the illumination of knowledge, wisdom, and the spirit of learning that lies at the heart of the game of chess. A captivating cultural performance by the students infused the occasion with vibrancy and enthusiasm, creating an inspiring atmosphere for the competition ahead.
Welcoming the distinguished guests, team mentors, and participating schools, the Principal, Ms. Shalini Agarwal, expressed her delight at hosting such a prestigious event. In her address, she highlighted the significance of chess as a powerful tool for developing critical thinking, patience, analytical skills, and sound decision-making. The Chief Guest, Grandmaster Adhiban Baskaran, inspired the young participants with his insightful words, encouraging them to embrace every challenge with confidence, perseverance, and the true spirit of sportsmanship.
The championship featured an exciting two-day contest conducted over five Swiss-system rounds in accordance with FIDE regulations. Students competed across four age categories—Classes Nursery to III, IV–V, VI–VIII, and IX–XII—displaying exceptional concentration, tactical acumen, and composure throughout the tournament. The competition was conducted seamlessly under the expert supervision of Chief Arbiter AI Mr. Amit Sharma, whose meticulous officiating ensured transparency, fairness, and adherence to international standards.
The event was impeccably organised, ensuring a smooth and enriching experience for players, teachers, and parents alike. The enthusiastic participation and exemplary conduct of the students highlighted the growing popularity of chess among young learners and reinforced its role in developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. The tournament witnessed intense yet friendly competition across various age categories. Participants demonstrated remarkable analytical skills, resilience, and composure as they engaged in challenging matches. Every move on the chessboard reflected thoughtful planning, calculated decision-making, and unwavering focus, making the championship a true celebration of the "battle of minds."
Chaturanga 2026 concluded on a high note with a prize distribution ceremony, where the winners were felicitated with trophies, medals, certificates, and cash awards in recognition of their outstanding performances. A heartfelt vote of thanks marked the formal conclusion of the championship, acknowledging the unwavering support of the school management, dignitaries, organising committee, participating schools. The championship left participants inspired and motivated, reaffirming K.R. Mangalam World School's commitment to promoting excellence in academics, co-curricular activities, and holistic education.
